Treatment

ORTHODONTICS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD
Specific individual patients may benefit from early orthodontic intervention and this may prevent or correct a problem in the early stages.

ADOLESCENT ORTHODONTICS
Most orthodontic treatment using ‘braces’ is undertaken around this age when all the second or permanent teeth have erupted.

ADULT ORTHODONTICS
An increasing number of adults seek orthodontic treatment to enhance their smile or improve a bite problem.

INITIAL CONSULT
This is a 15 minute appointment where Dr Green will discuss the reason for your visit and undertake an orthodontic examination of your teeth. This will provide necessary information for your correct diagnosis prior to recommending treatment options. A written report will be sent to you by letter with a quote for treatment.

RECORDS
Orthodontic diagnostic records are required before treatment commences and will confirm Dr Green’s initial diagnosis.

Records consist of; two radiographs (x-rays), impressions of your upper and lower teeth to provide study models of your teeth and a series of photographs of your teeth and face.

You and your dentist will be provided with a written treatment report confirming and outlining study of your treatment.

RECALL VISITS
If a patient is not ready for treatment, they will be recalled as appropriate. We contact and advise patients when their next recall appointment is due.

Placement of ‘Braces’ (Phase 1)
Having braces fitted on upper and lower teeth takes approximately 50 minutes; this is a painless procedure and no form of anesthetic is necessary. Several hours after the braces are fitted it is normal to require mild pain relief (eg aspirin, panadol) for a few days as the teeth mobilize to allow movement during orthodontic treatment.

APPLIANCE ADJUSTMENTS
Approximately 4-6 weekly; this may vary depending on individual treatment.

AVERAGE TREATMENT TIME
This will be estimated for an individual and depends on the difficulty of the problem being treated, the patients response to treatment including their co-operation, following instructions and attending scheduled appointments.

RETENTION (Phase 2)
This is the supervised retention period of 12 months and commences when the ‘braces’ are removed, the removal of braces is a painless process. Retainers are provided and used to maintain your teeth in their new position. Retainers are fitted and checked 4 monthly during the 12 month period. Retainers can be a removable appliance and/or bonded wire behind the front teeth.

FINAL APPOINTMENT
After 1 year of retention visits your orthodontic treatment and retention can be considered complete.

Dr Green works in conjunction with dentists and oral surgeons for those patients requiring aesthetic restoration treatment for uneven teeth and also patients requiring surgical jaw movements to correct a servere bite discrepancy that is unable to be corrected by orthodontics alone.
